The Wisconsin Badgers and Luke Fickell continue their recent recruiting dominance in the 2027 class, landing safety Mekhi Williams. The 6-foot-2 and a half-inch safety is listed as a composite four-star recruit, ranking as high as 107th overall on 247’s website. Williams chose Wisconsin over powerhouse schools such as LSU, Nebraska, Auburn, Florida, Miami, and many more.

He deked everyone out by initially putting on a LSU hat after swiping off the Nebraska hat. Then, after waiting a second or two, he tossed the hat and put on the Wisconsin hat. His family erupted and threw up "W" hand signs. He said he picked Wisconsin because of the relationship with coaches and the academics.

The Badgers were even able to snatch him from the teeth of Florida State, the school to whom he was committed prior to visiting Madison. In fact, it was directly after Williams took a tour of the campus that he chose to reopen his recruitment, making this decision unsurprising.

Now that Wisconsin has landed Williams, the fun doesn't stop, as until he is signed to the school he has no obligation of showing up on campus. We have already seen him flip once prior, meaning this event is in the realm of possibility, albeit very unlikely.

What to look forward to

If and likely when Williams first steps foot on the turf for Wisconsin, there is no doubt that he will be an impact player. Many evaluators tout Williams as a ball hawk, citing his elite length and speed as what allows him to cover ground so quickly. As a result of this, he has already racked up 10 interceptions in his varsity career, an impressive feat considering he still has one year left of high school.

Williams has also been nationally renowned for his play, logging invites to the Under Armor All-American Bowl as an underclassman and the Polynesian Bowl. Now, entering his senior year, Williams can look to continue to add to his trophy case, although it may be difficult to replicate his production given his reputation.

A lot of people will likely point to Williams' very slim, 160-pound frame as to why he may not work out at the college level. Although that concern is valid, it's also important to remember just how young he is and how much time he has to grow.

Would he be able to make an impact on a Big 10 field tomorrow? Likely not. But in two years time with added strength, game experience and overall growth, who knows how fly Mekhi can fly.
