The Wisconsin Badgers looked like they were back and were rolling in the first half. The only touchdown allowed was gifted to Notre Dame by the refs. Wisconsin then went into the locker room down three points, 13-10, and ready to capture the same energy, intensity, and momentum in the second half and maybe, just maybe, knock off No. 4 Notre Dame. Except the same Badgers didn't come back out.
The team lost the spark, the edge, the ability to respond to the punches thrown by Notre Dame. It was literally the tale of two halves. Which is exactly how Luke Fickell started his explanation of what happened, but then he didn't have answers or, maybe better yet, he had "non-answers." This is all so concerning and should make a Wisconsin fan wonder if Fickell has this team headed in the right direction.
His long answer is below, but it was lacking. Wisconsin fans will leave frustrated after listening to it: "We kind of held the energy and created a lot of the momentum in the first half," Luke Fickell explained, "And in the second half we had none." What's the answer? Well, he didn't seem to have one post-game, and that's a problem.

Notre Dame made necessary adjustments at half-time and Wisconsin did not

The best teams go into the locker room, whether they are winning or losing, and make adjustments. Find points and places to attack, to mix things up, weak points on the opponent's side, etc. Notre Dame did exactly this; Wisconsin did not. "They physically got after us in the second half." Fickell continued, "We felt like we were in a really good place in the first half. I don't know if that's because we got worn down...the energy and momentum shifted in one direction, and we could never get it back."
The Wisconsin fan base is already on the fence about whether Luke Fickell is the guy who can fix this program. Fickell himself said this game would be the litmus test to see if they closed the gap or how far they've come to closing the gap. He sees Notre Dame as one of the top programs and a National Championship favorite. This is the aspiration of Wisconsin, and so, "how close are they?" Well, in the first half it sure looked close; in the second half, it was awful.
The Badgers just were not the same team. In the first half, they were more physical, aggressive, and fiery, making smart decisions with the ball, and then in the second half it was the opposite of that. Which is a problem, and the fact that Fickell doesn't seem to know why is a bigger problem.
Sure, this game always felt like a loss, but that's also a problem. If Wisconsin wants to get where all the fans want them to get, this game against No. 4 Notre Dame should have felt like a win, not a loss. And the fact that Fickell doesn't seem to know what went wrong is concerning.
