Greg Gard managed to get the monkey off his back in a big way. Gard was getting accused of being a coach who couldn't keep the in-state talent home. Year after year, Wisconsin was watching top player head to schools like Iowa State or Duke. He put all that to rest with the recent addition of top-100 2027 player Jalen Brown.

He's not only a hometown high school star from Milwaukee, but he's also recognized as one of the best guards in the 2027 recruiting class. Brown knew it was time to commit after his recent visit to Wisconsin. During the week, it all sank in that he wanted the pressure of being a hometown legend, and he told Nick Osen, "I didn't want to pass up the chance to be part of this community."

While Brown was on campus, Greg Gard was running point on his visit. He was also the main contact for Brown the entire way through. This showed Brown that Wisconsin really, really, valued him and wanted him to be a Badger. It's an old-school way of doing it, but it worked for Brown.

The 6'4 guard from Wauwatosa West High School told Evan Flood of On3.com that he wants to bring home championships. "I want to make my home state proud and bring championships." It's fitting because that's exactly what he did in high school. Brown helped lead his high school program to a state title in 2025.

This experience is going to pay a ton of dividends for Wisconsin, and if he truly is a plug-and-play, next year's team could have a lot of fun with Brown as a threat on the offense. He can play a role, he can shoot the rock, get to the basket, or even just take over games when called upon. Brown is the style of player that Greg Gard loves.

Brown is a guard that many scouts think is already ready to go as a freshman and that he can plug and play into Wisconsin's system immediately. This isn't something Gard is overly used to, as most of the freshmen he brings in need a year or more of development. Yet, that's how special this pickup is for Gard and Wisconsin.

One thing that Gard always prioritizes, and high school basketball doesn't usually, is defense. There will be some work to be done as Brown transitions to the college game, but he has all the tools to be an elite defender, and his athleticism is off the charts. Don't be surprised to see him listed as a starter next season when Wisconsin tips off the first game of the year. Brown is that good and that game-changing.

Brown is going to be a different-maker, and he's going to do it for his home state, and that should make all Badger fans smile.
