Greg Gard Has a Lot to Prove This Year Based on Wisconsin's Team Transfer Rankings
The Badgers lost a lot of talent to the transfer portal including star player AJ Storr and beloved point guard Chucky Hepburn. In total, seven players left Wisconsin basketball via the portal in just a few short weeks. Since then, Greg Gard and company have brought in three new players in Camren Hunter, John Tonje and Xavier Amos. So where does their work in the portal rank according to various team rankings?
On3 Sports Ranking
On3 sports is a well respected and popular site for transfer news, predictions and rankings. For their team portal rankings, their criteria is as follows:
On3's Team Transfer Portal Index utilizes the On3 (P)erformance score to measure a team’s production during the transfer process, compared relative against its roster and not a comparison against other schools. This proprietary algorithm determines if a school has improved its overall team talent, stayed the same, or declined in talent during the transfer window.
So how do the Badgers stack up? According to On3 the Badger rank 62nd overall and 16th in the Big Ten in the portal. Oof. The site doesn't seem to think that the talent coming in matches the overall talent that left. This is a similar sentiment felt by a lot of fans who see that several of the Badgers additions were from mid-majors or injured or both. There's a lot of question marks, but there's also a lot of potential.
247 Sports Ranking
Like On3, 247 Sports is another big player in the transfer portal realm. So let's see how the Badgers rank here.
247 has the Badgers ranked 44th overall and 11th in the Big Ten. They don't specify their criteria but it seems they look a little more kindly upon Wisconsin in the portal. Although the players the team brought in are somewhat considered as wildcards, there is a lot to like: a former freshman of the year, a 5th year senior, and a great shooter.
Takeaways
It seems like overall these sites are fairly down on the Badgers transfer window. The team may still look to add another player, but the majority of the work is done. After a poor end to the season in 2023, Greg Gard will have a lot to prove this year with these newcomers.
