The Indianapolis Colts Rookie Minicamp 2025 kicked off yesterday, and there were a lot of things to pay attention to if you are a Colts fan. However, as a Badger fan, there was only one player to watch: Hunter Wohler. When the Colts drafted Wohler, they listed him as a linebacker, but he has actually never played that position. In his collegiate career, he only ever played at safety.
However, local media are saying that Wohler fits the body type of a dime linebacker under the Colts' new defensive coordinator, Lou Anarumo. He plays physical, can flip into coverage, or rush the passer. It seems as if the Colts are mostly thinking about him at linebacker, but that's not what his position said at rookie minicamp.
Hunter Wohler is listed as a safety on the Indianapolis Colts Rookie Minicamp roster
Wohler getting to try out at safety is probably better for his ability to make the roster as a seventh-round pick. However, this doesn't seem as if it's set in stone; there's still a bunch of ambiguity around the idea.
Paul Bretl of Colts Wire (part of USA Today) said this about Wohler being listed at safety:
"Perhaps for the few days of rookie minicamp, from a numbers perspective on the roster, the Colts needed another safety. Also, if we look at the Colts' 91-man roster overall, the safety depth is quite thin when compared to linebacker, especially with Indianapolis having just signed Joe Bachie, who played under Lou Anarumo in Cincinnati."Paul Bretl
Colts Wire goes on to say, "Wohler is listed as a safety or a linebacker, from the sounds of it, we will see him filling roles at each position as needed. Specifically in Anarumo's scheme..."
The Colts drafted Wohler because of his versatility and ball-hawking skills. They will give him lots of opportunities to make the roster, and he may find himself a bit of a hybrid: depth at the safety position but, long-term, a dime linebacker for Indianapolis. It's a story to continue to watch as the offseason continues and Wohler works to make the roster.
