True freshmen takeover: Young players are all over the week 1 Wisconsin depth chart

Ahead of Thursday's season opener against Miami (OH), the Badgers released their two-deep depth chart. While much of it was expected, there were several surprises, and sometimes even head-scratching, names to appear on the initial chart. Most notably, five true freshmen were included, which could mean any number of things, good or bad.

The freshmen to make the two-deep depth chart are WR Eugene Hilton, LB Mason Posa, LB Cooper Catalano, CB Cairo Skenes, and CB Jaimier Scott. That's a good amount of true freshmen and shows the future, but provides a little bit of concern.

Wide receiver Eugene Hilton has impressed all summer, and his inclusion was widely expected after offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes proclaimed the young player as "one of the better receivers." He'll likely see the field as the fourth wideout, which may happen more often depending on the severity of tight end Tucker Ashcraft's injury.

Linebackers Mason Posa and Cooper Catalano have also had solid camps and looked to have earned roles beyond just special teams. Luke Fickell said in his press conference on Monday that the duo will play on defense as well. Posa was the highest-rated recruit for Wisconsin during this past cycle and has already emerged as a future star.

Here's where things get a little more concerning. With cornerback Nyzier Fourqurean's status still up in the air, the position has quickly become pretty thin. True freshman corners Cairo Skenes and Jaimier Scott are listed as backups to Ricardo Hallman and Omillio Agard, but it's difficult to say if it's related to the lack of depth or their play on the field. Cornerback will certainly be a position to monitor throughout the season if Fourqurean doesn't return.
