The Wisconsin Badgers have seen some activity regarding the transfer portal. Reserve guards Camren Hunter and Daniel Freitag decided to enter the portal to find more playing time at new schools. The latter of which begs the question if Wisconsin basketball high school recruiting is dead. On the other hand, the Badgers might get a high-caliber guard from San Diego State who fits Greg Gard’s offense.
Nick Boyd predicted to sign with the Wisconsin Badgers, according to 247Sports.
Boyd was a three-year guard at Florida Atlantic, where he was a starter on FAU’s 2023 Final Four squad. In three seasons with the Owls, Boyd averaged eight points/game, along with 2.1 assists/game and 3.2 rebounds/game. After the 2024 season, Boyd transferred to San Diego State, where he increased his PPG to 13.4 points/game in 31 starts for the Aztecs.
Should the Badgers land Boyd, it would be a tremendous backcourt acquisition. Boyd can play the point guard, which allows John Blackwell to stay at the two-position. At SDSU, Boyd’s 13.4 PPG and 3.9 APG led the team, which means he is capable of being an effective floor general for a strong collegiate basketball program.
If Badger fans have not already watched his highlights from last season, they should. Boyd is a quick guard who is not afraid to get downhill and attack the rim. As the top assist man, he can drive down and kick the ball out to open shooters behind the three-point line.
Speaking of three-pointers…
As we saw this season, Gard’s offense will rely on shooting the three-pointer. Boyd is not afraid to shoot the three, having attempted 148 shots from behind the three-point line. While his 35% three-point percentage doesn’t stand out, it’s an area in which the Badgers can help Boyd improve.
Right now, the Badgers are battling the North Carolina Tar Heels for Boyd, but Wisconsin is the favorite. Boyd is the point guard this Badgers squad almost desperately needs for next season and would set up a fantastic 1-2 punch between him and Blackwell.
