The Wisconsin Badgers were one of the finalists for 4-star linebacker Tate Wallace. The No. 2 player in the state of Iowa chose the Minnesota Golden Gophers over Wisconsin, Arizona State, and even Iowa State. Minnesota lands its third 4-star commit and is now passing Wisconsin in the recruiting rankings for 2027.
Wallace has over 15 offers, but ultimately zeroed in on Minnesota, scheduling a visit at the end of May, but deciding that's where he wanted to play next season before it took place. This is a perplexing decision for Wallace, but in the recruiting world, you never fully know what will happen and which recruits will land well.

Cites linebackers coach Mariano Sori-Marin as a big reason. Gophers win what was a battle down the stretch with Wisconsin, Arizona State and others.https://t.co/85zqejGuU7 pic.twitter.com/3P5t8zIKmZ

Even in Wisconsin's cold stretch the last few years, they've been known for strong linebacker play. That tradition goes back a long time and so it's surprising when the Badgers are in on a top linebacker from the Midwest and doesn't at least get an official visit and longer glance. However, you have to wonder if some of it may be that the Badgers have a very young core of top linebackers already.
Does Wallace think there is more immediate playing time going to Minnesota? That is one theory or maybe the NIL was higher, or even that he truly just wants to be a Golden Gopher.
Wisconsin still has a really strong recruiting class, but Minnesota and Wisconsin just swapped places on the 24/7 Sports recruiting rankings. The Golden Gophers jump into the top-15 while the Badgers fall out of it (now at No. 16).
Wisconsin has yet to land a linebacker in the 2027 class, but has its sights set on a handful, and the Badgers are still set to have a huge offseason, regardless of what Minnesota does. The Golden Gophers may have landed this one, but there are good things coming for the Badgers.
