There are very few losses to report in the Wisconsin 2027 recruiting class. The Badgers are on fire, and Luke Fickell is landing basically all of his priority targets. It seems like he's missed on a player; it's because they've been a secondary target. That may also be true of the latest miss: Logan Debose, a 3-star cornerback from St. Thomas, Texas.
Debose is an intriguing player, and Fickell was hoping to dip into Texas and bring him to Madison. However, after Debose took his first official visit to his hometown, the Houston Cougars, he decided not to leave the state. Not even leave the area. He's staying local to be a hometown hero.
Debose had a scheduled visit for Madison for next weekend, June 12. That visit won't happen now that he's fully committed to the Cougars, and Fickell can cross him off the list. However, that writing may have already been on the wall with Wisconsin's recent pickups.
BOOM. Houston keeps another hometown talent home.

Luke Fickell has a loaded 2027 class and one of the deepest spots is defensive back

Debose probably projects mostly as a corner in college, but that's still a 'to be determined' designation. He could also play safety, but he will be somewhere in the defensive backfield. That's where Wisconsin is arguably as deep as any other position group in the 2027 recruiting class. Fickell added two more defensive backs this last week.
First, it was 4-star and No. 1 safety in Florida, Mekhi Williams. Wisconsin then added defensive back Royalton Allen. Allen is similar to Debose in a lot of ways, and for Fickell, Allen was the priority. Though Debose would have been a nice addition, too.
The Badgers also already have Dustin Roach in the fold, who's also a potential safety. That's a pretty solid list of defensive backs in the class, and Debose may have been less of a priority, especially as word of him being a lock to Houston reached Madison.
Though maybe Fickell isn't done with defensive backs, as James Roberson is still deciding on his future, and Wisconsin remains a top choice. There are also five more defensive backs coming next weekend. It really was shaping up to be a defensive back weekend with 4-star Cooper Ohnmacht, 3-stars Evan Via, Cristian Mbamarah, Caleb Cooper, and Blaise Burwell all coming on the same weekend.

It is a position that needs depth, even this year. It was a position group that nearly ran out of bodies last season, and next season could use a few more young players to replenish the core. Thus, for Debose, while he may not have been the primary target, he was still needed. The Badgers aren't done adding at the position and are hoping next weekend, when Debose arrives, will still be a chance to add a few more defensive backs.
