Things just didn't work out for him in Madison.

It's that time of the year where players are saying goodbye to programs as they get ready to officially enter the transfer portal. Such has been the case for Wisconsin, losing several players already over the last week.

The list includes second-year quarterback Cole LaCrue, who signed with Fickell and the Badgers as part of the 2023 class. The writing was on the wall for LaCrue, as it was going to be an uphill climb for him to see playing time with Wisconsin.

Because of this, a report dropped last week that he was intending to enter the portal. He confirmed that news on social media, while also delivering a passionate message to the Wisconsin fanbase. This call wasn't easy for LaCrue, but he's ready to find a better fit moving forward.

Wisconsin QB Cole LaCrue will be entering the transfer portal

A three-star signal-caller out of Broomfield High in Colorado, LaCrue signed with the Badgers as the No. 52 quarterback in the country according to the 247Sports Composite. He was also ranked the No. 6 player overall from Colorado in his class.

He picked up six offers throughout his recruitment, ultimately signing with Wisconsin over Colorado and Central Michigan. It looked like LaCrue was going to have a bright future in town, but again, things just didn't go according to plan for him.

He was buried on the depth chart this season. Once Tyler Van Dyke went down with his torn ACL, quarterback Braedyn Locke took over as QB1, while true freshman Mabrey Mettauer was his backup. For next season, Wisconsin will be adding 4-star prospect Carter Smith to the QBs room.

With things being up in the air for Van Dyke (torn ACL), there's plenty of speculation the Badgers could go after a QB in the transfer portal too. Because of all that, the decision for LaCrue to head elsewhere makes sense. While his days in Madison will be over, fans are still wishing him well.
