When Big Ten accolades were announced on March 10th, Wisconsin Badgers fans saw John Backwell and Nick Boyd earn All-Big Ten honors. Many were surprised to see point guard Nick Boyd on only the second team. Among the honors, the most heartfelt went to assistant coach Sharif Chambliss.Â
This season, Chambliss was awarded the Howard Moore Assistant Coach of the Year by the Big Ten, an honor named for the beloved coach to recognize exceptional leadership and service by an assistant coach. The message was delivered to him in a way that will make all Badger fans smile. Â

If you are unfamiliar with Howard Moore’s story as a Wisconsin Badgers fan, you must read about it. Moore, a former Badger basketball player, was an assistant coach at Wisconsin from 2005-2010 and 2015-2019, during which he served as the head coach of the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames.Â
Tragically, his tenure as a Badgers assistant coach ended after the 2018-19 season. While visiting relatives in Michigan, Moore and his family were involved in a head-on collision with a driver going the wrong way. Moore’s wife, Jennifer, and his daughter, Jaidyn, died at the scene, while Howard sustained serious injuries. Two months later, Howard Moore went into cardiac arrest and was placed in a long-term care facility, ending his coaching career. Two years ago, Moore made his return to Kohl Center for a Wisconsin Badgers’ home game against Illinois and received a rousing ovation from all fans in attendance.   Â
Sharif Chambliss was the first Wisconsin Badgers assistant coach to receive the Howard Moore Assistant Coach of the Year award. This award adds to Chambliss’ spectacular resume as a long-time assistant coach at the Division I college basketball level.Â
