It's going to be a big weekend in Madison for the Wisconsin Badgers in terms of hosting transfer portal targets for official visits. More specifically, head coach Luke Fickell is going to be working overtime in finding a new starting quarterback for the 2025 campaign.
Both Tyler Van Dyke and Braedyn Locke won't be back with the team next season. While there's plenty of excitement surrounding Mabrey Mettauer and 4-star '25 signee Carter Smith, both youngsters won't be ready to start come next fall.
Fickell is looking at the portal to bring in a playmaker with experience. On Thursday night, it was reported that San Diego State transfer Danny O'Neil would be visiting. He's not the only one, as news just dropped that Maryland's Billy Edwards Jr. will also be making the trip to campus:
Maryland QB Billy Edwards Jr. will reportedly visit Wisconsin this weekend
Chris Hummer of 247Sports was the one to first report the Edwards-Wisconsin interest. This past season, Edwards tossed for 2,881 yards and 15 touchdowns. He originally signed with Wake Forest coming out of high school, but then he made his way to Maryland in 2022.
Now, he's looking for his third place to call home. Wisconsin isn't the only team keeping an eye on him, however, as Michigan is reportedly showing interest too. With the portal open until Dec. 28, both Edwards and O'Neil are going to look to make pretty quick decisions, while Fickell would like things set sooner rather than later too.
With the hiring of offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes official, he's going to have a major voice in things as well. For now, it looks like either O'Neil or Edwards will be the QB1 of the future for this squad, but could a last-minute surprise be on the way? Who knows, but the quarterback situation might get resolved in the near future.
