When Camren Hunter transferred to the Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball program, he came with notable upside. Hunter was the 2021-22 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year at Central Arkansas after averaging 14.1 points per game in 30 starts and earned first-team All-Atlantic Sun honors. One season later, Hunter bumped his average to 16.9 points per game and made third-team All-Atlantic Sun.

A foot injury caused Hunter to miss the 2023-24 college basketball season, where the star guard chose to transfer to Wisconsin. Unfortunately, Hunter never came close to displaying the scoring prowess he showed at Central Arkansas, only appearing in 11 total games with the Badgers, mostly in mop-up duty at the end of games. After the season, he decided to transfer back to Central Arkansas.

On Tuesday, former Badgers guard Daniel Freitag entered the transfer portal. Now, a second former Badger will enter as well.

After returning to Central Arkansas, Hunter had an outstanding regular season with the Bears. The senior guard averaged 19.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists on his way to earning Atlantic Sun Player of the Year. In addition, he was also a unanimous Atlantic Sun first-team selection.

Hunter led the number-one-seeded Bears to the Atlantic Sun championship game, where they ultimately fell to Queens University 98-93 in overtime. However, Hunter had a game for the ages, scoring a conference tournament record 49 points on 17-of-30 shots from the floor.

While it’s highly unlikely that Hunter will return to Madison, other high-major college basketball programs should be interested in the Central Arkansas star. One blue blood program already rumored to be interested in Hunter is Kentucky, according to Jacob Polacheck of On3. A team like Kentucky makes sense for Hunter, as the Wildcats are in need of a true point guard next season. However, the question is whether Hunter can repeat his success at a higher level of competition this time around.
