Former Badger Hunter Wohler only played safety in college, and yet there is uncertainty about what position he will play at the NFL level. He was drafted as a linebacker but is listed as a safety on the Indianapolis Colts' roster page. He's also been playing three different positions at training camp this week, adding more ambiguity to how the Colts will use him, or maybe it's better understood as more versatility.
The Colts have a unique defensive scheme in which they often use a package that requires a dime linebacker. Wohler has been given reps at camp to fill this spot and may have been where defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo imagined him when they selected Hunter Wohler in the seventh round.
He's also getting reps at safety and was able to make a pick off of a deflection during day six of training camp. This is his most natural position and one in which he can provide the Colts with depth.

Wohler has also been playing a ton of special teams, which is his most likely position next season, and depth at the other spots. However, he's working to learn all three positions and is ready for anything they throw at him. He spoke to the media about this and is just happy for the reps and any opportunity to get on the field.
"I enjoy being thrown into a lot of different things. One, it forces me to learn a lot and to grow more but two, it just gives me more opportunity to see the field. That's the goal to get on the field however it is possible whether it's special teams or defense, whatever I can do to get on the field on a Sunday and help the team, that's what I'm going to do. It won't be surprising to Wisconsin fans to see him earn his way onto the field, whether that's at the special teams or defense. He's an impressive player with a fantastic work ethic that will continue to grow and develop as a player to help his NFL team.
The Colts have three Wisconsin players on their roster: Center Tanor Bortolini, running back Jonathan Taylor, and safety/linebacker Hunter Wohler. You can watch all three in action in the first preseason game of the year for the Colts on Thursday of this weekâAugust 7th against the Baltimore Ravens.
