Wisconsin women's basketball head coach Robin Pingeton announced another transfer today. 5'7" junior guard Breauna Ware from Stony Brook. This will be her third collegiate season and her third team in that time. She spent her freshman year at St. Bonaventure, starting eleven games and playing in 30. Wisconsin announces the signing of Breauna Ware, transfer from Stony Brook
That freshman year set her up for greater success in Breauna Ware's sophomore season when she transferred to Stony Brook and started 25 of the 29 games she played in. She averaged 14.7 points, 4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. She was the leading scorer for Stony Brook in nine of the Seawolves' games. She is known for her toughness in games and her ability to play with measured aggression.
She mentioned as much in Wisconsin's press release after her signing. She said, ""I'm beyond excited and grateful to be a part of this program. I can't wait to bring that NY grit to UW. Let's work! Go Badgers!"
The only curious part of this, is that Pingeton has added a lot of guards in the transfer portal. Laci Steele, Destiny Howell, Kyrah Daniels, and now Breauna Ware are all listed as guards. While the Badgers have added Shay Bollin and Gift Uchenna as forwards, they could clearly use at least one more. With only one more scholarship to go, that has to be the priority.
Regardless, the team that Pingeton has built seems like it will be a step forward from where Wisconsin has been, but it's still a far cry from being competitive at the top of the Big Ten. That may be a multi-year project, and it would be a lot to expect in year one, but hopefully, this is the first step toward that goal.
