UPDATE: On3 is reporting that the decision was Moseley's and that she has resigned. You can read the latest here.

In a move that won't be overly surprising to anyone who has followed Wisconsin women's basketball, the UW Athletics Department has fired head coach Marisa Moseley. In her time at the helm, she went 47-75 and 21-51 in the Big Ten. The results weren't good enough to justify her retention, and with all the other issues surrounding the program, it was time to simply cut ties and start fresh.

Wisconsin's Marisa Moseley has been fired and the Badgers have begun a search for their new head women's basketball coach

The fans have been crying out for a change pretty much the whole season but especially during Big Ten play. When The Badgers lost eight games in a row to start the conference season, it was apparent the team wasn't getting better in Moseley's fourth season. The Badgers were getting worse. The lone bright spot on the season was when somehow, someway, UW took down the Michigan Wolverines.

UPDATE: Wisconsin Athletics has yet to announce this and have commented that she has NOT been relieved of her duties. Since reputable reports are saying she's gone and they are officially saying she's not gone, it seems more like a "leak" before it is official.

UPDATE 2: Talia Goodman is reporting that Moseley stepped down on her own and it was her choice.

The problems with Moseley are multifaceted. Obviously, the record is enough to send her packing, but the recruiting is still not good. You could argue that it's better than when she came, but the floor has barely been raised, if at all. There were also some allegations from former players that she had lobbed at her earlier this year.

Fans were ready to move on, and now the Wisconsin Athletics Department is, too. There may be some departures that go with Moseley as the program enters another or maybe an ongoing rebuild. This one could end up being a full rebuild, as the expectation is that players will transfer.

The question now is where Wisconsin will turn. The program has been here before, and the choice didn't improve the situation. There is concern that it could happen again. This hire will be very important for the future of Wisconsin women's basketball.
