Luke Fickell has added another important recruit to an already loaded 2027 recruiting class. James Roberson, a 3-star safety from Allen, Texas, is now the 22nd recruit in the class. Wisconsin isn't just loading up with numbers as they have in years past; this is truly a deep and talented class, and Roberson is another example of a top positional player in their state coming to Wisconsin.
Texas is one of the deepest recruiting states in the country, and yet Roberson is a top-100 recruit in the state, and he's a top-100 safety in the nation. It's another important addition for the Badgers, and the safety class that Luke Fickell has brought in may cause problems for Big Ten receivers for years to come. It's deep and talented both in-state and out of state.

Wisconsin has picked up a commitment from 3-star safety James Roberson from Texas

Roberson joins three other safeties in the 2027 class: DJ Davis, Dustin Roach, and Mekhi Williams. There's even a chance that Royalton Allen ends up being a safety in this class. There's also a chance that others from that list end up playing corner. Regardless, this class of defensive backs is extremely strong, headlined by 4-star Mekhi Williams, who's the No. 1 safety in Florida.
The flip to get Williams from Florida State was huge, and now the other defensive backs surrounding him are going to be key to the defense in the next couple of seasons.
Roberson told Nick Osen that the development and relationship with Jack Cooper is the big reason he wanted to be a Badger, "I got along with the players really well, and have a really good relationship with Coach Coop. I feel like he is a great coach and will develop me well.” Cooper has only been in the safeties coach seat for a few seasons, but has been part of the defensive staff for longer. He's credited with his role in developing both Hunter Wohler and Austin Brown (both now in the NFL).
Cooper is really bringing in his priority recruits and plenty of them. The development will be a big key as he seems to have brought in a good group of skilled athletes who are capable of playing safety but now need to learn what it looks like at the college level, specifically the Big Ten.

Roberson is now the 22nd recruit in the class. This class is ranked No. 13 by 24/7 Sports and No. 24 by On3.com. It's the best class ever in Luke Fickell's tenure, and while it won't be really finalized until December, as the rankings become final. This class is impressive no matter how you slice it, and it's mixed with both in-state recruits, top recruits from other states, stars, and under-the-radar gems. Fickell has really built out an impressive start, and clearly, the NIL money is flowing.
