Luke Fickell's current bragging rights over Ohio State will give Wisconsin fans hope

Don't look now but Wisconsin is ranked ahead of Ohio State.

The Wisconsin Badgers have never had a higher recruiting ranking at this point in the calendar year than they do right now. According to 24/7 Sports, the Badgers are the No. 13 class in the country with 22 total recruits. For reference, Wisconsin ended the 2026 recruiting class with a No. 68 ranking. If you look at the recruiting standings, the Badgers are cruising not just nationally but in the Big Ten, ranking fifth in the conference.

If you look closely, you'll see the Big Ten teams ranked in this order:
No. 6 - Oregon
No. 7 - Penn State
No. 10 - USC
No. 11 - UCLA
No. 13 - Wisconsin
No. 15 - Ohio State
No. 16 - Minnesota
No. 17 - Nebraska
No. 18 - Michigan
No. 20 - Washington

Not that the Buckeyes need to be defended, but simply so no one has to hear them whining about this...Ohio State only has 13 total commits in the class compared to most of the other programs being right around 20. However, for the time being and maybe even into the season, Wisconsin's hope is in both the current transfer class playing in 2026 and the future 2027 recruiting class.

Luke Fickell has never had a class like this in his history as a head coach. His goal now will be to work hard to retain all of the players before signing day in December. For now, it's impressive with six 4-star recruits, headlined at the top by the No. 1 safety in Florida, Mekhi Williams. 4-star running back and top in-state player Kingston Allen isn't far behind.

Wisconsin may even see another jump in the rankings as there's a chance the Badgers pass Auburn shortly, even without taking on another recruit. 24/7 Sports' Nick Osen says the database will be updated to include one of the most recent recruits, Jack Tabbert, who flipped from North Dakota State to Wisconsin last week.

Even if Tabbert is a low 3-star, this should be enough to push Wisconsin to No. 12 in the rankings.

Not every service is as high on the Badgers as 24/7 Sports. On3.com isn't as bullish on Luke Fickell's class with a No. 23 ranking. On3 tends to value quality over quantity in their system; a 5-star is going to be way more valuable than four 3-stars, according to the way they rate the players. This style of ranking actually has the Ohio State Buckeyes at No.7 due to the two 5-stars in the class.

This ranking style will also devalue a team like Minnesota's class because there are nearly 30 recruits in the class, but only four 4-stars. The Golden Gophers are ranked No. 27 in the On3.com rankings.

Wisconsin's 2027 isn't quite done, but it has slowed down a ton. With 22 commits already in and a target of around 25, there won't be many more additions. Fickell is still trying to get Brody Pfannenstiel to flip from Texas Tech. There are also a couple more visitors on the list: 4-star Bennett Konkey and 3-star Finn Walker. This class could grow, but even if it's done, hats off to Fickell for doing something remarkable in the recruiting department, even after finishing the season at 4-8. Fantastic work.
